If you’re wondering whether you or your child might have ADHD, the idea of starting the diagnosis process can feel overwhelming. Where do you begin? Who do you talk to? What’s involved?
At Brainworks Psychology, we understand that clarity starts with information. That’s why we’ve broken down the ADHD assessment process in Perth — so you know exactly what to expect, every step of the way.
Step 1: ADHD Assessment with a Psychologist
The first step toward a formal ADHD diagnosis in Western Australia is a comprehensive assessment with a psychologist.
At Brainworks Psychology, our ADHD assessments are available for:
– Children aged 6 years and older
– Teenagers and adults of all ages
This initial assessment includes multiple components to ensure we’re getting a well-rounded view of how ADHD may be affecting your life or your child’s development.
What’s Included in the ADHD Assessment
The full ADHD assessment at Brainworks includes:
– Initial Consultation (30–45 minutes): A one-on-one clinical interview with a psychologist to explore your history, current concerns, and goals.
– Cognitive Testing (approx. 1.5 hours): Standardised assessments that look at executive functioning, attention, memory, and more.
– Follow-up Feedback Session (30–45 minutes): A review of your results and a discussion of what they mean in real-world terms.
– A Comprehensive Written Report: Delivered in due course, this report outlines your findings, interpretations, and next steps.
This report is essential for moving on to Step 2 of the process — a formal diagnosis with a medical specialist.
Step 2: Formal Diagnosis with a Psychiatrist or Paediatrician
In WA, ADHD is formally diagnosed by a medical specialist, such as a:
– Psychiatrist (for teens and adults)
– Paediatrician (for children)
While psychologists like our team at Brainworks conduct detailed assessments, the official diagnosis — and any discussion of medication options — must come from one of these medical professionals.
To book in with a specialist, you’ll need a GP referral. You can do this before or after your assessment with us, but most people find it helpful to visit a GP after their appointment with us and bring our detailed report along as it gives your GP detailed insight into your experiences, strengths, and challenges who can then refer you onto the relevant specialist.
Do I Need a Referral to Book with Brainworks?
No referral is needed to book your ADHD assessment at Brainworks. You can contact us directly and get started right away — we don’t have a waitlist, and new appointments are generally available within a few weeks.
However, if you’d like to access Medicare rebates, you will need to obtain a GP referral or Mental Health Care Plan before your appointment.
What About Medicare or Private Health Rebates?
If you have a referral or Mental Health Care Plan, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on the initial and feedback consultations (not the cognitive testing component). These rebates are typically around $140 total.
You may also be able to claim part of the cost through your private health fund — but rebates vary, so it’s best to check directly with your provider to confirm what’s covered under your plan.
